THORMANN® tray

The THORMANN® tray, developed by Julius Montz GmbH (now part of Koch-Glitsch), is engineered for scrubbing processes and vacuum distillations, effectively handling minimal liquid loads with exceptionally low pressure drops and high separation efficiency.

The increasing cost of energy and higher awareness of environmental concerns have led operating companies to look at ways to improve the energy efficiency of one of their highest energy consuming unit operations: mass transfer separation applications.

For new columns, Koch-Glitsch high-capacity trays can be used to reduce vessel diameters, heights, or both. For existing columns, Koch-Glitsch high-capacity trays can increase capacities, reduce utilities, and improve separations.

Improving column performance using high-performance trays can provide significant economic rewards, which include:

  • An increase in column feed rates for the same energy consumption
  • A reduction in the energy consumption for the same feed rate
  • An improvement in product purity
  • A reduction in absorption liquid circulation rates and a corresponding reduction in regeneration energy cost requirements
  • A reduction in pollutant discharge levels with no increase in scrubbing/stripping costs

The Thormann® tray is designed to handle even the lowest liquid flows, e.g. 40 l/(m2h ) [0.016 gpm/ft2], at a pressure drop as low as 1 mbar per tray.

The arrangement of the caps combined with the special vapor slots ensures a controlled flow pattern of the liquid on the tray and consequently a favorable residence time and a high separation efficiency.

Liquid weeping is minimized (even under minimum vapor flow rates) and can be completely eliminated by seal welding on installation. The vapor risers are formed from the tray deck and prevent the liquid from leaking down by design, which helps to achieve higher separation efficiency.

Optional cooling or heating coils may be provided between the rows of caps for use in, for example, exothermic absorption or reactive distillation applications
